Over the years I have come to understand better the connection between a person's manifestation of allergy symptoms, and the disconnect with Nature's natural seasonal rhythm. Let me explain. I believe that seasonal allergies occur in large part because we as a culture have stopped living and eating seasonally. Before the industrialization of food and the disconnection from the rhythm of nature and the plants, every early spring began with a spring cleanse. Look at what Nature is giving us at this time of year... if we look to Nature we see the young green shoots, the fresh greens that are loaded with chlorophyll and bitter medicinal constituents that stimulate detoxification and cleansing. These herbs are known as "alteratives" or spring tonic herbs that cleanse the blood and detoxify the body. After having provided us with roots and rich starches to sustain us through the hibernation times of the winter, Nature pulls us out and through into Spring by providing us with a spring cleanse.
Yet most of us don't get that much-needed spring cleanse this time of year because we are out of sync with Nature's rhythm. Without this spring cleanse for which we are programmed, the body (and as a result, the energy body) becomes confused and stagnation and inflammation occurs... this leads to the manifestation of seasonal allergies, or a hyperactive and inflamed immune system.
For this reason, I HIGHLY recommend a gentle spring cleanse at the change of season from winter into spring. Below I lay out a "spring cleanse" tea to help reset the immune system before spring and the growing times begin. I also share some tried and true herbal supplements that I have seen bring great relief to chronic allergy sufferers.
Ideally, an annual allergy sufferer should begin the following protocol at least 3 weeks before their allergen usually arrives. This requires some pre-thought, though is so worth it. Beginning to support and stabilize the immune system greatly decreases the person’s susceptibility. This often stops the person from manifesting allergy symptoms ie hay fever once the allergen does arrive. If a person isn’t able to begin an herbal protocol before the allergen arrives, the following steps will still help to relieve and alleviate their symptoms.
Step 1: 10-14 day Herbal Tea Cleanse
Embody The Light: Spring Herbal Cleanse
1/2 oz Nettle leaf
1/4 oz Cleavers herb
1/4 oz Raspberry leaf
1/4 oz Plantain leaf
1/4 oz Red Clover herb
1/4 oz Chickweed herb
1/4 oz Peppermint leaf
Directions for awakening and use… The time for this tea is when the light is returning, the green vibrant stir becomes visible in Nature, and the spring stirring within begins; when you are feeling called out of the hibernating and introspective time of winter.
Mix the herbs together in a sacred manner, invoking the good, true beautiful and compassionate of each of the plants. Invoke the light of early spring into the blend; this time on the wheel when the light is returning and all of nature is swelling with the pregnancy of dreams bursting forward. Invoke the gentle preparatory cleansing properties of the herbs to help gently cleanse and prepare your body for the embodiment of light that is coming.
Steep ½ cup of the tea blend in 1 quart of water each morning, steep for 15 minutes then strain and drink throughout the day. Repeat this each day until the blend is gone, after 10-14 days.
Step 2: Herbal Immune Support
Freeze-dried Nettle Capsules: Take three caps 3x daily. Also, consume nettles freely and drink strong nettle infusions daily. Nettles are an amazing anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory herb, they both prevent and bring immediate relief for acute histamine (allergic) type responses.
Bee Pollen & Raw local honey: 2-3 tsp of each daily, in a smoothie, mixed into yogurt, or eaten straight. Raw and local honey and bee pollen have a vaccine-like effect on the immune system, ingesting them orally before the allergen arrives seems to have a sensitizing effect on the histamine cells so that when the pollen arrives in the air, the person's immune system is already accustomed to the compounds and doesn't mount an antibody attack.
Minimize dairy, sugar, or other food allergens: Decreasing foods that we are allergic too helps support our immune system and raise our "inflammatory threshold" - meaning our body becomes less reactive and better equipped to handle challenges such as environmental allergens.
Of course, and always, look to Nature for guidance as to how best orient to the time of year. Another interesting correlation I have seen over the years, is that oftentimes the plants that people have high allergens to also end up being their strongest allies. She is in constant communication with us! Let us remember how to listen.
May your spring unfold with ease and grace, and may there be much space in your being for the light that you are!
